“Groves of trees protect our fields from being desiccated by the desert winds that blow from neighbouring regions. During the summer months they provide moisture and shade. If trees are not presently planted to replace those being cut down from time to time, our constant efforts to conserve and develop the wealth of our country for the welfare of present and future generations will be rendered ineffective and futile.” H.I.M
All our programs are interlinked through the spiritual and material philosophy which guides us. It is a crucial aspect of our organization to encourage awareness, restoration and conservation for our environment in everything we do.
Tree planting is one of the major environment-related practices we are consistently involved in. We are working to liaison with schools, government, individuals, communities and international organizations in our campaign and practical tasks. For almost two years, we have joined with the United Nations Environment Program UNEP and the Greenbelt Movement on the "plant a billion trees campaign" and are progressing well towards our pledge to record one million trees planted through the coordination of Shiriki Organization. We are also working with the Government of Kenya's Department of Forests.
All the agriculture activities and awareness efforts emphasize sustainable environmentally friendly organic farming. Through this we continue learning and sharing on the symbiotic dynamics of natural organisms and ecosystems. It is a progressive step that Shiriki Organization is now working closely with the Organic Farmer magazine, a franchise which is very effective in educating and networking amongst organic farmers and linking markets for produce.
The artwork being produced by Haile Selassie I Foundation volunteers is a study in utility of natural environmentally suitable materials and recycling. Thus we emphasize on nurturing and utilizing what can be found within our natural surroundings: seeds, bamboo, natural twine and dyes as well as textile material. We have a dynamic sandal industry where recycled tires are used.
Our campaign towards more environmentally friendly attitudes can be discerned in the music and poetry we make, on the media presentations, public forums and in all interactions. This task never ceases for all who are of the same mind. Let us work in concert.
